Founded in 1845, Wittenberg is predominantly a liberal arts institution that is nationally recognized for its east Asian and Russian area studies. Despite its small size, the university offers 100 Bachelor degree programs. Majors offered include Theatre Arts Management, Piano and Organ, Journalism, Cartography, Dance, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, and African-American/Black Studies. Head coach Sarah Jurewicz enters her first year at Wittenberg in 2007-08. Jurewicz takes over from Pam Smith who passed away in June 2007. Jurewicz has big shoes to fill. Through 19 seasons Smith had eleven 20+ win seasons, made seven NCAA appearances, and won ten regular season championships. Jurewicz, who played under Smith, is Wittenberg's all-time leading scorer and earned team Most Valuable Player honors three times in her Wittenberg career. She returns to Springfield after four years as an assistant coach at Colorado College. In 2007-08, Jurewicz's inaugural season, the Tigers went 15-11.

Wittenberg plays in the North Coast Athletic Conference (www.northcoast.org) comprised of ten schools from Ohio (7), Indiana (2) and Pennsylvania (1). Wittenberg and main rival, College of Wooster, are the perrenial powers. Over the last 17 years, only once has either Wooster or Wittenberg not won the NCAC. League play can commences in early December. The 16 league games are usually played on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons with the men's. The farthest away game is at Alleghent, about 300 miles from Springfield. The season concludes with the NCAC tourney which takes the top eight teams and the winner receiving an automatic NCAA berth.
