Founded in 1891, Stanford is internationally renown with a faculty that is one of the most distinguished in the nation. Head Coach Tara Van Derveer enters her 23rd season at Stanford in 2007-08. Van Derveer has a stellar .790 winning percentage for her career, putting her 3rd among active D1 coaches. At Stanford, she has led the Cardinal to two national titles, 16 Pac-10 titles, and 19 NCAA appearances. Prior to coming to Stanford in 1984-85, Van Derveer led Ohio State to four Big 10 championships in five years. A former player and graduate of Indiana University, Van Derveer also coached the U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal in 1996. In 2006-07, the Cardinal went 29-5, won its fifth straight conference title, but were shocked in the second round of the NCAA tourney by Florida State.

The Cardinal play in the PAC 10 (www.pac-10.org) which is comprised of ten teams from four states. No conference has more NCAA team titles than the PAC 10. Currently, Stanford plays a 18 game schedule with conference play commencing in January with most games played on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon. Stanford will play each team twice, home and away. The farthest away game at the Universty of Washington, some 850 miles from campus. The season concludes with the PAC 10 tourney which includes all teams with the top six teams receiving first round byes. Tourney winners receives an automatic NCAA berth.
