Northwestern plays in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (www.gpacsports.com) which is comprised of 13 teams from three midwestern states. The conference is generally regarded among the top three NAIA II conferences in the nation. Though conference play can start in late November or early December, there are non-conference opponents mixed into the schedule until January. There is a two week break at Xmas. Conference games are often played on Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon and are piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the GPAC tournament which takes the top eight teams with the eventual tournament winner receiving an automatic NCAA bid.
