Mississippi State was founded in 1878. It offers over 70 undergraduate and graduate majors and about half that many doctoral programs. Agriculture-related majors dominate. Majors offered include Animal and Dairy science, Food and Nutrition, Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Polutry Science, Elementary and Secondary Ed, Fitness Management, and Wildlife and Fisheries. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Mississippi State in the third tier among national universities.

Mississippi State forms part of a cohesive town-university community with the growing agricultural-commercial-industrial town of Starkville (pop.22k). The 4200 acre campus including farms, pastures, and woodlands is located 125 miles north of Jackson.

Head coach Rick Stansburg completed his 10th season at Mississippi State in 2007-08. Stansburg was an eight year assistant on Richard Williams MSU staff, primarily responsible for recruiting. Stansburg succeeded his former mentor in 1998-99. In his first season he took the Bulldogs to a 20-13 record and an NIT showing. Since then, Stansburg has garnered five NCAA berths and was the first coach in the school's 93-year basketball history to record four consecutive 20-win seasons. He also captured the SEC crown in 2003-04. A highly regarded recruiter, Stansburg was an assistant coach at Austin Peay before coming to MSU as an assistant in 1990-91. Stansburg began his coaching career at Campbellsville, his alma mater, where after lettering four years in basketball, served as a graduate assistant coach. In 2007-08, the Bulldogs posted a 23-11 record and advanced to the NCAA second round before losing to Memphis.

Conference and Schedule

Mississippi State plays in the Southeastern Conference (www.secsports.com), one of the nation's premier leagues for Division 1 men's basketball. The conference is made up of 12 teams from nine states and is split into two divisions, east and west. MSU plays in the West. MSU plays a 16 game schedule, playing each team in the west twice and teams from the east once. League play commences after January 1 with most games played on Wednesday or Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the SEC tourney with the winner of the 11-game tournament receiving the SEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament seeds, conference championship and division titles are determined by the 16-game conference schedule during the regular season. Teams are seeded by their divisional finish and features Eastern Division-Western Division matchups in every game should the higher seed win each contest.
