Gary Williams completed his 19th year in 2007-08 as Maryland's head coach. Prior to coming to Maryland, Williams was head coach at Boston College, American University, and Ohio State. A starting point guard for the Terps for three years before graduating with a business degree in 1968, Williams took over a program in 1989-90 that had been sanctioned by the NCAA and won just nine games the year before while finishing last in conference. In his first year, Williams won 19 games. Williams has become the 6th winningest coach in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2002, he guided the Terps to the national championship. Through 30 seasons overall, Williams has collected 604 wins, placing him among the top 20 winningest active coaches. In 2007-08, Maryland finished with a 19-15 record and were eliminated by Syracuse in the second round of the NIT.

Maryland plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (www.theacc.com) which has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest D1 conferences. The league is comprised of eleven teams from six states. With the expansion to 12 teams in 2005, the ACC schedule could no longer accommodate a home-and-away series between every pair of teams each season. In the new scheduling model, each team is assigned two permanent partners and nine rotating partners over a three-year period. Maryland plays a 16 game schedule, playing each team twice, home and away. League play commences in January with most games played on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The season concludes with the ACC tourney which includes all teams with the top five teams receiving first round byes. Winner is an automatic NCAA qualifier.
