Head coach Bill Self completed his 5th year at Kansas in 2007-08. Few would argue that Kansas is perhaps the most successful men's college basketball program in the nation today. Dr. James Naismith, who invented the game of basketeball and was KU's first coach, would be proud of what the program has accomplished. In the last 37 years Kansas has had only three losing seasons and sports an all-time .712 winning percentage. While the Jayhawks's most recent success came under former coach Roy Williams whose teams over a 15 year period averaged nearly 28 wins per season, the baton has been passed to the younger, yet highly successful Self, who began his coaching career at Kansas in 1985 as an assistant under Larry Brown. Self, who enjoyed success at Oral Roberts, Tulsa, and more recently, Illinois, brought a .663 winning percentage to Kansas. Following on the footsteps of back-to-back 30 win seasons, Self wasted no time proving himself in his inaugural debut in 2003-04, going 24-9. In 2007-08, Self led the Jayhawks to a 37-3 record and beat Memphis for the NCAA championship.
