Head coach Bruce Weber completed his 5th season at Illinois in 2007-08. Weber took over for Bill Self who produced a 78-24 record the previous three years. However, the Fighting Illini program has historically been a top contender as attested by the school's .653 winning percentage since inception. Weber comes from Southern Illinois where he coached for five years, winning 103 games against just 54 losses. Weber brings 26 years of collegiate coaching experience with one season at Western Kentucky followed by 18 years as an assistant under Keady at Purdue. During those 18 seasons, the Boilermakers played in 14 NCAA tournaments and made three NIT appearances. Weber wasted no time proving he was the right person hired, averaging 28 wins over the last four seasons. In 2006-07, Illinois went 23-12, however, Weber has a disappointing season in 2007-08 when the Fighting Illini went 16-19.
