Head coach Steve Jenkins completed his 27th season at Evangel in 2007-08. Jenkins, Evangel's all-time winningest coach, served as an assistant before taking the reins in 1982-83. Though Jenkin's career record is not that impressive, he has taken the Crusaders to new heights since the mid-90s. Since 1997-98, the Crusaders have complied at 239-119 record, averaging nearly 22 wins per season. His best record is the 35-1 mark established by the 2001-02 team which won the national championship and went 20-0 in league. A former graduate and star basketball player at Evangel, Jenkins has had similar success coaching baseball and was the school's head coach for five seasons. In 2007-08, the Crusaders finished with an overall mark of 28-7, but lost in the second round of the NAIA tournament to Oregon Tech.

Evangel University plays in the Heart of American Conference (www.haaconference.com) which is made up of 11 schools from Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa. The conference is generally regarded as one of the strongest at the NAIA II level. The 20 game conference schedule can start in late November or early December with games usually played on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Evangel plays each team twice, home and away. The men's games are usually piggybacked with the women's. Traditionally, there is a two week break at Xmas. The farthest conference game is at Graceland, some 300 miles from Springfield. The season concludes with the HAAC conference tournament, made up of the top eight teams in the conference standings. The conference tournament champion gets the conference’s first automatic berth into the NAIA II national tournament. The conference’s second automatic berth is filled by either the No. 1 or No. 2 in the final standings – depending on the outcome of the tournament.
