Established in the 1830s by Quaker and Methodist farmers, Trinity College (as it was known then) was among the first colleges in the south primarily dedicated to training teachers. A tobacco magnate named Duke built another campus by the turn of the century and in 1972 the two colleges combined to form Duke University. The university has retained its connection to the Methodist Church. Today, Duke is a research-oriented university offering over 30 Bachelor degrees, nearly 40 Master's degrees and over 30 PhDs. Majors offered include Forestry, Music, Public Policy Analysis, Anthropology, and Chemistry. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Duke #8 among national institutions.

Duke is located in Durham (pop.200k) about 40 miles north of Raleigh. Durham is home to the Research Triangle Park, home to dozens of high tech firms and rivals California's Silicon Valley.

Misc. Information

After leading Michigan State to one of the nation’s elite programs, Joanne P. McCallie takes over for Gail Goestenkors in 2007-08. Goestenkors, the winningest coach in Duke history, was the driving force behind Duke's exciting rise to national prominence over the last decade. McCallie led Michigan State to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, four straight 20-win seasons and an appearance in the NCAA Championship game in 2005. Prior to Michigan State, McCallie was head coach at the University of Maine where she led the Black Bears to a 167-73 mark, six straight NCAA appearances and seven consecutive 20+ winning seasons. McCallie began her coaching career at Auburn and played college ball at Northwestern. In 2006-07, Duke posted a 32-2 record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to Rutgers.

Conference and Schedule

Duke plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (www.theacc.org) which has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive conferences at the D1 level. The conference is comprised of 12 teams from six states. With the expansion to 12 teams in 2005, the ACC schedule could no longer accommodate a home-and-away series between every pair of teams each season. In the new scheduling model, each team is assigned two permanent partners and nine rotating partners over a three-year period. League play, consisting of 16 games, commences in January with games often played on Mondays and/or Thursdays and Sunday afternoon. The season concludes with the ACC tourney which includes all teams with the top five teams receiving first round byes. Tournament winner is an automatic qualifier.

Conference Opponents

Virginia, North Carolina State, Clemson, Boston College, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Facilities

Cameron Stadium
Capacity: 9,314, Average attendance: 4500

Sports Illustrated rated Cameron Stadium, fourth on a list of the top 20 sporting venues in the world in the 20th Century, ranking ahead of such notables as Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Pebble Beach Golf Club.

Style/Stats

In 2005-06, Duke was ranked #1 in scoring offense at 86 ppg. In 2006-07, they were #12 at 75.5 ppg and #2 in defense, holding opponents to 51.4 ppg.
