Established in the 1830s by Quaker and Methodist farmers, Trinity College (as it was known then) was among the first colleges in the south primarily dedicated to training teachers. A tobacco magnate named Duke built another campus by the turn of the century and in 1972 the two colleges combined to form Duke University. The university has retained its connection to the Methodist Church. Today, Duke is a research-oriented university offering over 30 Bachelor degrees, nearly 40 Master's degrees and over 30 PhDs. Majors offered include Forestry, Music, Public Policy Analysis, Anthropology, and Chemistry. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Duke #8 among national institutions.

Duke is located in Durham (pop.200k) about 40 miles north of Raleigh. Durham is home to the Research Triangle Park, home to dozens of high tech firms and rivals California's Silicon Valley.

Mike Krzyzewski (Sha-shef-ski) or Coach K completed his 28th season at Duke in 2007-08. Mike came on board in 1980-81 and has continued the winning tradition that has made Duke the most successful program in the nation. Duke's all time winningest coach, Krzyzewski has taken the Blue Devils to 23 NCAA bids and nine Final Four appearances. Among active coaches, Coach K is the winningest coach in NCAA tourney play and his 70 tournament wins are unmatched. Among active D1 coaches, Coach K sports the 4th best winning percentage. Coach K was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame along with Temple's John Chaney and Moses Malone. Coach K has averaged 25 wins per season during his career at Duke, including nine 30 win seasons. Krzyzewski, a graduate of West Point who played under Bobby Knight, spent five years building the program at Army prior to his arrival at Duke. In 2007-08 Duke finished the season at 28-6 and lost in the second round of the NCAA tourney to West Virginia.

Conference and Schedule

Duke plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference (www.theacc.collegesports.com) which has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive conferences at the D1 level. The conference is comprised of 12 teams from six states. With the expansion to 12 teams in 2005, the ACC schedule could no longer accommodate a home-and-away series between every pair of teams each season. In the new scheduling model, each team is assigned two permanent partners and nine rotating partners over a three-year period. League play commences in January with most games played on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoon. The season concludes with the ACC tourney which includes all teams with the top five teams receiving first round byes. Tournament winner is an automatic qualifier.

Conference Opponents

Virginia, North Carolina State, Clemson, Boston College, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Facilities

Cameron Stadium
Capacity: 9,314, Average attendance: 9,314

Style/Stats

In 2007-08, Duke ranked #4 in scoring offense, averaging 83.2 ppg.
