Head coach Dana Altman completed his 14th season at Creighton in 2007-08. While the name Creighton University may not be as well known as other D1 programs, its men's basketball team has been on a roll of late posting ten straight 20+ win seasons -- a first at Creighton -- and three conference titles and eleven post season appearances. Much of the credit goes to Altman who has turned the Creighton program around after getting off to a rocky start his first season (1994-95). Altman, Creighton's all-time winningest coach, has been the Missouri Valley Conference's most successful coach over the last eleven seasons in terms of wins and winning percentage and Altman has been named a conference, district or national coach of the year 10 times during his career. Prior to his arrival, Altman was head coach at Kansas State where he led the Wildcats to three straight post season tournaments. In 2007-08, Creighton finished with a record of 22-11 but lost to Florida in the NIT second round.

Creighton plays in the Missouri Valley Conference (www.mvc.org), one of the oldest conferences in the nation. The MVC is comprised of ten teams from six states. Though generally considered one of the best mid-major conferences in the country; a few observers are beginning to grant the conference major status in basketball. Creighton plays an 18 game schedule, playing each team twice, home and away. Conference plays starts in late December or early January with games usually played on Thursday or Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The farthest conference game is in Evansville, some 500 miles from campus. The season concludes with the MVC tourney which seeds all teams in single elimination format with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Creighton plays an up-tempo game while using the bench liberally. Using a high-post offense, the Jays set an MVC record for three-pointers made in 2004-05 (293) and ranked fourth nationally in three-point percentage (40.4%) as well. CU runs a lot of motion, but also has a number of set plays to isolate match-up advantages. Creighton presses the entire game using zone traps and man-to-man looks.
