Founded in 1845, Baylor University is the oldest state university and the largest Baptist-affiliated institution in the world. It offers 147 Bachelor degree programs, 21 Master's, and 21 PhD's. Head coach Kim Mulkey enters her 8th season at Baylor in 2007-08. During her brief seven year tenure, she has averaged over 25 wins per season, made six NCAA appearances (including a National Championship) and one WNIT, and broken attendance records. Prior to coming to Baylor, Mulkey spent 15 years as an assistant and associate coach at her alma mater, Louisiana Tech, where she served as the chief recruiter. During her 20 year coaching history, only once has she had a team that won less than 20 games in a season! Among active D1 coaches, she ranks 7th in winning percentage. As a player, Mulkey led her teams to a 130-6 record and two national titles. She was also a member of the USA's 1984 Olympic gold medal team. In 2006-07, Baylor went 26-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney before being upended by North Carolina State.

Baylor plays in the Big 12 (www.big12sports.com) which is regarded as one of the most difficult conferences in the nation. The Big 12 is comprised of 12 teams from seven different states. Currently, Baylor schedules 16 league games, playing five teams twice and the six teams once. Conference play begins in January with games typically played on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big 12 tourney which takes all teams with the top four receiving first round byes. Winner gets an automatic bid into NCAA Championships.
