Jim Murphy completed his 14th season at Bates in 2007-08. Bate's women's basketball program was uninspiring until Murphy, a 1969 Bate's graduate and gridiron MVP, took over the reins in 1994-95. Bates inherited a team that had had losing seasons in four of the previous five years. Though Murphy endured a 7-15 season his first year, he has since found the winning formula and has had winning teams since, averaging nearly 20 wins per season since 1996. During that span, the Bobcats have made six NCAA appearances and produced five 20+ winning seasons. Besides basketball, Murphy also coaches women's soccer and has enjoyed similar success. In 2007-08, the Bobcats finished with a 15-10 record (the same as the year before) but did not make an NCAA bid.

Bates plays in the New England Small Colleges Athletic Conference (NESCAC) consisting of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges located in New England and New York. Several of the colleges in this conference are sometimes referred to as the Little Ivies. There is a 2-3 week winter break before league play starts in January with games typically played on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The farthest conference away game is at Williams, some 560 miles from Lewiston, and games are usually piggybacked with the men's. Colby will play two teams twice and others just once for a total of 11 games. The top seven teams qualify for the NESCAC tourney; single elimination, top seed hosts, first place team receives first round bye, with the winner receiving an automatic bid the to the NCAA tourney.
