Founded in 1958, Alvernia College is a Catholic institution with a focus in liberal arts that offers over 30 undergraduate majors and three graduate majors in Business, Education, and Liberal Studies. Alvernia also offers two health programs, a bachelor's degree in Nursing and a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy. About two-thirds of those enrolled are women. Other majors offered include Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, Criminal Justice, Health Care Administration, Occupational Therapy, and Sport and Fitness Administration. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Alvernia in the fourth tier among universities in the north offering a Master's degree. Head coach Kevin Calabria enters his 20th season at Alvernia in 2007-08. Calabria came to Alvernia in 1988-89 after having successfully coached at Holy Names HS for seven years. A 1974 graduate at the University of Notre Dame, Calabria holds a B.S. in Chemistry and works as a stockbroker. Calabria inherited a program that had been dormant for ten years and was asked to restart it. Since his arrival, Calabria has produced a .686 winning percentage. In conference play, Alvernia consistenly is the team to beat in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference as attested by a conference winning percentage of .825 over the last eight years. Calabria has garnered six conference titles and since 1996 made six NCAA appearances. In 2006-07, the team posted a 16-11 record.

Alvernia plays in the north division of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (www.thepaconline.org) which is comprised of 12 teams, all from Pennsylvania, split into two divisions. Alvernia plays in the north. Alvernia plays teams in its own division twice and cross divisional rivals once. Games are usually played on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Alvernia usually takes a three week break at Xmas. The farthest away game is at Marywood, about 100 miles from campus. The season concludes with the PAC tournament with the top four teams from each division qualifying. The tourney winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA as does the conference regular season champion.
