Founded in 1886 originally as a teacher's college, Winthrop offers 40 undergraduate degrees including Art History, Enviromental Studies, Sports Management, Human Nutrition, Theatre, and of course, Education. Head coach Randy Peele took over from Gregg Marshall in 2007-08. Under Marshall, the Eagles made seven NCAA appearances while averaging 21 wins per season during his eight year tenure. Peele recently severed as Marshall's top assistant for four years. Peele also served as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 1999 to 2002, at St. Michael’s College in Vermont (1983-85), Tennessee-Martin (1985-88), and Campbell (1988-1991). He was head coach at UNCG from 1991-1995 during which time the Spartans won two Big South titles and a conference tournament championship. In 2007-08, Peele's inaugural season, Peele went 22-12 but the Eagles lost to Washington State in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Winthrop plays in the Big South (www.bigsouthsports.com) which is comprised of nine school from four states. Among D1 conferences it is considered a lightweight though quite competitive. Winthrop currently plays a 16 game schedule with play starting in January with one weekday game and another on Saturday evening. Winthrop will play each team twice, home and away.
