Williams Colllege was founded in 1793, one of the oldest institutions in the U.S. The college built its reputation around teaching. The college offers over 30 Bachelor degee programs plus graduate programs in Art History and Development Economics. Other majors offered include Russian Language, Astronomy, Drama, and Japanese. A program announced in 2006, Williams in Africa (WIA), enables Juniors to spend anywhere from several weeks to a year studying in Africa and doing humanitarian work. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Williams #1 among liberal arts institutions nationally. The campus is located in Williamstown (pop. 9k ) in the Berkshires, at the Vermont and New York borders, about 150 miles from Boston or New York. Head coach Pat Manning completed her 17th season at Williams in 2007-08. Manning inherited an uninspired .500 ball club in 1991-92 and has since turned the women's program into one of the most respected in New England. Prior to coming to Williams, Manning was the assistant basketball/volleyball coach at Skidmore College, as well as head softball coach. Manning played both softball and basketball in high school and rugby in college. Manning's best year was in 1998-99 when the Ephs went 25-2 and lost in the NCAA Elite Eight. Manning attended Smith College where she was an assistant basketball coach from 1986 to 1988. In 2007-08, the Ephs went 16-9.

Williams plays in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (www.nescac.com) consisting of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges located in New England and New York. Several of the colleges in this conference are sometimes referred to as the Little Ivies. The farthest conference away game is at Bates, some 560 miles from campus. Games are usually piggybacked with the men's. The top seven teams qualify for the NESCAC tourney; single elimination, top seed hosts, first place team receives first round bye, with the winner receiving an automatic bid the to the NCAA tourney.
