Head coach Lynn Ullom enters her 17th year at West Liberty State in 2007-08. Ullom joined the WLS staff in 1991-92. While enduring losing seasons his first two years, Ullom has been on a roll ever since, making the Lady Hilltoppers the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's most successful program claiming four tournament championships, three regular season championships, and six NCAA appearances while averaging 21 wins per season. The 2001-02 season was the most memorable with the school sporting a best-ever 27-4 record and being among the nations's best D2 programs in scoring margin and defense. After posting a dismal 13-14 record in 2004-05 (the program's first losing season since 1993) the Hilltoppers rebounded nicely in 2005-06, going 23-7 and went 21-10 in 2006-07.

West Liberty plays in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (www.wviac.org) which is comprised of 15 schools which historically operated exclusively in the state of West Virginia, but has now expanded into Pennsylvania. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The WVIAC is comprised of 16 public and private schools. It is the largest D2 conference. League play commences in January. Currently, West Liberty plays each team once, and four teams twice. Games are usually piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the WVIAC tourney which takes all schools with the top seed receiving a first round bye. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
