Head Coach Michael Cooney takes over from Ed Murphy in 2007-08. Under Murphy, the Braves captured six first place division titles, made six NCAA appearances, and averaged nearly 20 wins per year during his 14 year tenure. As Murphy's top assistant for ten seasons, Cooney helped lure a collection of major talent to the UWG program. During his 10 years as an assistant, West Georgia compiled a 201-91 record. Even before coming to West Georgia, Cooney was no stranger to successful basketball programs. He served four seasons under Paul Westhead at George Mason (Va.) University. Prior to George Mason, he coached at Morehead (Ky.) State and Loyola Marymount (Calif.). In 2006-07, the Braves finished at 14-15.

West Georgia plays in the largest D2 conference - the Gulf South (www.gulfsouthconference.org) which is comprised of 18 schools in six southeastern states. It is divided into two divisions, east and west. UWG plays in the east. While conference play may begin in early December, the schedule contains non-conference opponents until January. Despite their being two divisions, UWG only plays schools in its own division and each is played twice, home and away, with games often played on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the GSC tourney which includes the top five teams in each division. The top seed gets a first round bye. The winner receives automatic NCAA berth.
