Head coach Mark Edwards completed his 27th season at Washington University in 2007-08. Washington University's all-time winningest coach, Edwards returned to his alma mater in 1981-82 to restart a men's basketball program that had been dropped in 1971 for financial reasons. Today, Edwards has established the Bears as a perennial contender. Prior to his arrival, Edwards served as an assistant coach at Washington State (D1) under George Raveling. After losing records his first three seasons, Edwards has amassed 24 consecutive winning seasons, 12 NCAA appearances (including a national championship), and eight regular season titles. As a player at Washington, Edwards was team MVP and captain his senior year and still ranks seventh in career rebounds. The Bears stepped it up in 2007-08, going 25-6 and beat Amherst for the D3 national championship.

Washington plays in the University Athletic Association (www.uaa.rochester.edu) which is comprised of nine schools from Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio and New York. Conference play usually begins in January after a two week winter break. Washington will play each team twice, home and away. Games are often played on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons and are piggybacked with the women's. The farthest conference away game is at Brandeis (Waltham, MA), about 1,000 miles from campus. The season concludes with the UAA tourney which includes all teams in a double round-robin format with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA tourney.
Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, U. of Chicago, Emory, U. of Rochester, and NYU.
