Washburn University was founded in 1865 and was originally known as Lincoln College. It offers over 40 Bachelor degree programs and seven Master's. Majors offered include Criminal Justice, Computer and Information Sciences, Gerontology, Nursing, and Substance Abuse/Addiction Counseling. Head coach Ron McHenry completed his 8th season at Washburn in 2007-08. Prior to his appointment, McHenry spent the previous 11 seasons as an assistant coach for Washburn's successful men's team. McHenry began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the men's program in 1984-85. In 1988, McHenry was an assistant coach for the Topica Sizzlers of the CBA. McHenry played for Washburn after stints at Coffeyville Community College and University of Kansas. The last six years have been unbelieveable with the Lady Blues making three Sweet 16 appearances, two Elite 8 and one NCAA D2 national title. In 2007-08, they went 26-7 overall but lost in the Elite 8 to South Dakota.

Washburn plays in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Conference (www.themiaa.com) which is comprised of ten teams from Missouri and Kansas. Washburn begins league play after January 1 and will play each conference member twice, home and away, for a total of 16 games. League games are often played on Wednesdays and Saturdays and are frequently piggybacked with the men's. The farthest conference away game is at Truman State, about a four hour drive from campus. The season concludes with the MIAA tourney which takes the top eight teams with the eventual winner receiving an automatic NCAA berth.
Central Misouri State, Emporia State, Missouri Southern State, Southwest Baptist, Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri, Truman State, Fort Hays, and Pittsburg State.
In 2005-06, Washburn was ranked #14 in defense, limiting opponents to 56 ppg. In 2006-07, they were ranked #12 at 54.8 ppg.
