Founded in 1858 as a teacher's college, Winona State University is now a comprehensive, regional public university. Winona State offers 80 undergraduate, pre-professional, and graduate programs on three campuses. Undergraduate degrees include Accounting, Elementary Education, Mass Communications, Criminal Justice, Nursing, and Aviation. Over 60% of those enrolled are women. Head coach Mike Leaf completed his 10th year at Winona State in 2007-08. Leaf has put big numbers up the last four years. In 2005-06, his championship team went 31-4. Leaf outdid that in 2006-07 going 35-1 and undefeated in league play. Then, in 2007-08 he topped that, going 38-1 overall and undefeated in league play while picking up his second national championship in three years, beating Augusta State for the title.

Winona State plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (www.northernsun.org) which is comprised of ten teams from Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. Winona State will play each team twice, home and away. The 18 game conference schedule usually starts in December. League games on typically Fridays and Saturdays and often piggybacked with the women. The farthest conference away game is at Northern State some 475 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Northern Sun tourney which includes all eight teams with the winner receiving a berth in the NCAA tourney.
