Virginia Union is an all-black college founded in 1865 for newly emancipated slaves by prominent Baptists from the Washington D.C. area. The university has a liberal arts focus with a theological mission. It offers nearly 30 Bachelor degree program plus a Masters in Theology. Other majors offered include Psychology, Journalism, and Drama. Head coach Dave Robbins completed his 30th season at Virginia Union in 2007-08. With three NCAA D2 championships, 13 conference titles, and a winning percentage of .791, Robbins is considered one the premier college coaches in the nation. Over the last 30 years he has averaged nearly 24 wins per season. Among active D2 coaches, he currently ranks 3rd in winning percentage and 4th in total victories. During his tenure, he has guided the careers of several NBA players including Ben Wallace and Charles Oakley. Robbins came to VU in 1978-79 after making Thomas Jefferson HS in Richmond a top-ranked team in the state. The Pathers finished the 2007-08 season with a 30-4 mark but fell in the first round of the NCAA tourney to Lenoir-Rhyme.

Virginia Union plays in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (www.theciaa.com) which is comprised of 11 teams from Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. The CIAA is the oldest African-American athletic conference. The conference is divided into two divisions, east and west. Virginia Union plays in the east. Virginia Union starts its conference play in January and will play teams in its own division twice, home and away, and teams in the west once.
