Founded in 1920, Vanguard was originally established as a bible training institute. Vanguard offers over 30 Bachelor degrees with graduate programs in Religion, Education, and Clinical Psychology. Nearly two-thirds of those enrolled are women. Majors offered include Family and Marriage Counseling, Pastoral Studies, Radio and Television, and Film/Video Production. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Vanguard #4 among colleges in the west offering a Bachelor's degree. Head coach Russ Davis completed his 12th year at Vanguard in 2007-08. Up until Davis's arrival in 1996-97, the women's program had losing seasons in 9 of the previous 12 years. Vanguard won three straight conference championships between 1998 and 2000 and averaged 27 wins per season before going 17-12 for both 2001 and 2002. Davis took Vanguard to the NAIA national tourney in 1997-98 - its first trip to the post season since the program's inception in 1985. Over the last six years, Vanguard has averaged 30 wins per season. Davis coached at the high school level before coming an assistant coach at Vanguard in 1995-96. A year later he was promoted to head coach. Davis went 29-5 in 2007-08 and won the NAIA I national championship by beating Tevecca Nazarene.

Vanguard plays in the highly competitive Golden State Athletic Conference (www.gsacsports.org) which his comprised of 11 teams, all in California, all Christian based institutions. The GSAC is among the top NAIA I conferences in the nation. The pre-season usually includes several D2 opponents. Confernence play can commence in late November or early December and teams play each other twice, home and away. Games are usually held on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. The farthest away game is at Westmont (Santa Barbara) about 140 miles from campus. The top eight teams in the conference are invited to the GSA postseason tourney with the winning team receiving an automatic bid to the NAIA national tourney..

In 2005-06, Vanguard was ranked #3 among NAIA I teams in scoring offense at 83.2 ppg. In 2006-07, they were again ranked #3 at 83.5. In 2006-07, they were ranked #6 in defense, holding opponents to 56.4 ppg.
