Virginia Wesleyan was founded in 1961. VWC is a small, liberal arts institution that offers 38 diverse undergraduate majors including Criminal Justice, Religious Studies, Theater Arts, Earth and Environmental Science, and Computer Science. US News 2008 Report on America's Best Colleges ranked VWC in the fourth tier among liberal arts schools nationally. Head coach David Macedo completed his 8th year at Virginia Wesleyan in 2007-08. Macedo joined the Marlins after having served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Wilkes University, and then two years as the men's assistant at VWC before taking over the reins in 2000-01. Macedo-coached teams have set five of six defensive records at VWC, the top five marks for three point scoring, and the top two totals for most points scored in a season. In 2005-06, he led the Marlins to VWC's first national championship in any sport and almost pulled it off in 2006-07, going 28-5 losing to Amherst for the national championship. In 2007-08, the Marlins went 22-6 and made the second round of the NCAA tourney before falling to Ursinus.

Virginia Wesleyan plays in the Old Dominion Conference (www.odaconline.com) the second largest D3 conference. Its 14 member schools are located primarily in Virginia, with other members in North Carolina and Washington, DC. The ODAC is considered one of more competitive D3 conferences. League play, which can start in late November or early December, consists of 18 games. The Marlins will play each team twice, home and away. Conference games are often played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The season concludes with the ODAC tourney which includes the top eight teams. There are no byes and games are played at neutral sites. The winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
Hollins, Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon, Guilford, Roanoke, Washington and Lee, Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater, Roanoke, Sweet Briar, Hampton-Sydney, and Emory and Henry.
