The Tar Heels plays in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, the Atlantic Coast Conference (www.theacc.com). The ACC is comprised of twelve teams from six states. With the expansion to 12 teams in 2005, the ACC schedule could no longer accommodate a home-and-away series between every pair of teams each season. In the new scheduling model, each team is assigned two permanent partners and nine rotating partners over a three-year period. North Carolina plays a 14 game schedule commencing after January 1. Games are often played on Thursday or Friday evening and Sunday afternoons. The season concludes with the ACC tourney which includes all teams with the top five teams receiving first round byes. Tournament winner is an automatic qualifier.
