Head coach Jim Calhoun completed his 21st season at Connecticut in 2007-08. In the last decade, only North Carolina has more Sweet 16 NCAA appearances than UCONN. Calhoun inherited a team in 1986-87 that had had four consecutive losing seasons. Though Calhoun posted a losing record his first year, he has not had a losing season since. During the 90's, the Huskies averaged 25 wins per season (30+ win seasons three times), won six Big East titles, and captured the national championship in 1998-99. Among winningest active coaches, Calhoun ranks 7th in victories. Calhoun, a former player at American International College (D2), was that school's 4th all-time leading scorer and later served as AIC's assistant coach. Coming off a 17-14 mark in 2006-07, the Huskies rebounded nicely in 2007-08, going 24-9 but lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney to San Diego.

UCONN plays in the Big East which is now comprised of 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. UCONN will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) League games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
