The University of Texas at Austin is the state's flagship school and boasts having the second highest number of merit scholars among incoming freshman versus its sister campuses. It is also one of nation's largest public universities with an enrollment of 50,000. Seven of the school's doctoral programs rank in the top 10 in the nation. Among its undergraduate programs, its Radio and TV and Business school are highly regarded. Head coach Rick Barnes completed his 10th year at Texas in 2007-08. Barnes has guided Texas to a school-record ten consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including three Sweet 16s, one Elite 8, and one Final Four in the last seven years. In his short tenure, Barnes has averaged more than 24 wins per season. Career-wise, Barnes has averaged 20 wins per season over 20 years and had just one losing season. Prior to coming to Texas in 1998-99, Barnes was head coach at George Mason, Providence, and Clemson. At Clemson, he produced the school's best all time winning percentage. Barnes began his coaching career as an assistant at North State Academy in 1977-78. Barnes was a standout player at Hickory High (NC) and played college ball at Lenoir-Rhyne. In 2007-08, the Longhorns went 31-7 and advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA tourney before falling to Memphis.

Texas plays in the Big 12 which is regarded as one of the most difficult conferences in the nation. The Big 12 (www.big12sports.org) is comprised of 12 teams from seven different states in two divisions. Texas plays in the south division. The Longhorns plays a 16 game schedule, playing five teams twice and the remainder once. Conference play begins in January with one game played during the week and another on Saturday afternoon. The season concludes with the Big 12 tourney which takes all 12 teams with the top four receiving first round byes. Tournament winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
South: Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Baylor. North: Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas State, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa State.
