Founded in 1884, Temple is one of Pennsylvania's three public research universities along with Pittsburg and Penn State. Temple University is the 28th largest university in the U.S., the sixth largest provider of professional education in the country, and known for its programs in law, education, media, business, and health sciences. It offers over 120 Bachelor and Master degrees and nearly 60 PhDs. Head coach Dawn Staley enters her eighth season at Temple in 2007-08. Staley, an Olympic gold medalist in Athens in 2004 and five time WNBA all-star, has taken a dormant program and put it on the map. Since arriving in 2000-01 (and up until 2006 playing for the WNBA during the summers), Staley has averaged 21 wins per season, garnered five tournament titles, and made five NCAA appearances. USA Today's National High School Player of the Year in 1989, Staley played at Virginia before playing overseas and the WNBA. In 2006-07, she took the Owls to a 25-8 mark (her fourth consecutive 20+ winning season) but lost in the second round of the NCAA tourney to Duke.

Temple plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference (www.atlantic10.org) which is comprised of 14 teams from six states and the District of Columbia. Although some of its members are state-funded, it is largely made up of private, Catholic institutions. Conference play begins in late December/early January with games usually played on Fridays and Sundays. The season concludes with the AC 10 tourney which takes all teams with the top two teams receiving first round byes. The winner is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA tourney.
St. Josephs, George Washington, Rhode Island, Massassuchettes, St. Bonaventure, Fordham, Duquesne, Richmond, Dayton, Xavier (OH), St. Louis, UNC Charlotte, and La Salle.
