Head coach Richard Schmidt completed his 25th season at Tampa in 2007-08. Schmidt came to Tampa in 1982-83 to resurrect a program that had been dormant for 13 years. In his first season, with four freshmen in the starting line-up, Schmidt took the Spartans to the NCAA tourney and a 20-11 season. It was the first time in NCAA history, at any division, that a first year program made it to the NCAA's. During his tenure, the Spartans have made 16 NCAA appearances and averaged 21 wins per season. Under Schmidt’s direction the Spartans have finished first or second in the SSC in 18 of 25 seasons. In 2007-08, the Spartans posted a 21-9 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney before falling to St. Benedict.
