Founded in 1857 as Athen's Female College, Tennessee Wesleyan is a liberal arts institution affiliated with the Methodist Church. A high percentage of those enrolled are business majors (40%) and nearly two-thirds are women. It offers nearly 20 Bachelor degrees in such majors as Nursing, Music, and Personnel Administration. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Tennesee Wesleyan #45 among universities in the south offering a Bachelor's degree. Head coach Jeff Rice completed his 2nd season in 2007-08. Rice replaced Stan Harrison in 2006-07 whose teams amassed over 400 wins, nine conference championships, and seven NAIA tournament appearances in 25 seasons. Prior to being named head coach, Rice served as Harrison's assistant for 16 seasons. During that time, the program won over 325 games, won six conference championships, and participated in six NAIA national tournaments. In 2006-07, Rice's inaugural season, the Lady Dogs posted a 23-9 record but did not receive an NAIA bid. In 2007-08, Rice went 14-17.

Tennessee Wesleyan plays in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (www.accsports.com) which is comprised 14 schools from five states. Most games are played against league opponents, where TWC plays each team twice, home and away. Given the size of the league, conference play can start in late November or early December. A three week break at Xmas is customary. The 26 conference games are often played on Tuesday or Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon with games typically piggybacked with the men's. The season concludes with the AAC conference tourney which takes (describe how the seeding works).
