Head coach Jim Boeheim completed his 32nd season at Syracuse in 2007-08. A perrenial power with a .695 program winning percentage, Syracuse University owes much of that to Boeheim. A former walk-on player in 1962, Boeheim became a graduate assistant coach in 1969, then assistant coach, and finally head coach, a position he as held since 1976-77. Boeheim has clearly established himself among the nation's top elite coaches. Among active D1 coaches, he is fifth in winning percentage. Except for 1993, Syracuse has made post-season play every year, including 24 NCAA and six NIT appearances. Over the last 32 years, Boeheim's teams have averaged 24 wins per season and never had a losing season. In 2002-03 the Orangemen claimed the national championship. In 2007-08, Syracuse produced a 21-14 and advanced to the NIT Elite 8 before falling to UMASS.

Syracuse plays in the Big East (www.bigeast.org) which is now comprised of 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Syracuse will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) League games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
