Founded in 1948, St. John Fisher is an independent liberal arts institution offering nearly 30 Bachelor degree programs including pre-professional programs. Head coach Phil Kahler completed his 33rd year at St. John Fisher in 2007-08. Kahler started the program in 1974-75 when only 34 women were enrolled in the entire school. During his tenure, his teams have produced 20 or more wins 27 times. During the decade of the 90s, St. John Fisher was among the top defensive teams eight times while also making eight NCAA tournament appearances. When Kahler moved his program from independent status to the Empire Conference they were still among the top 25 defensive teams in the nation. Following a 25-3 record in 2005-06, the Cardinals have fallen on a rough patch of late, going 13-12 in 2007 and 13-14 in 2008.

St. John Fisher plays in the Empire 8 (www.empire8.com) which is comprised of eight private schools, all in New York. SJFC joined the Empire Conference in 1998 after playing an independent schedule for 25 years. League play commences in January after a three week winter break. Fisher will play each team twice, home and away. The 14 league games are usually played on Tuesdays or Fridays and Saturdays and are piggybacked with the men's. The farthest conference away game is at Hartwick some 200 miles from campus. The season concludes with the Empire 8 tourney which takes the top four teams. Higher seeds host. Winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
