The College of St. Benedict is a woman's-only college affiliated with St. John's University - a men's only school. (Students attend classes and activities together, and have access to the resources of both campuses.) This Catholic, liberal arts institution, offers graduate programs in theology and offers nearly 40 Bachelor degrees through the Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences departments. Some the majors offered include Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Forestry, Psychology, Dietetics/Human Nutritional Services, and Drama. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked St. Benedict # 106 among liberal arts institutions. The two schools - though six miles apart - share 3,200 acres are are located in St. Joseph (pop.5k) which is about 50 miles from Minneapolis. Head coach Mike Durbin completed his 22nd season at St. Benedict in 2007-08. Durbin was an assistant coach at Mt. Vernon Nazarene for two years and head coach at Wittenberg for one year prior to coming to St. Benedict in 1986-87. Over the last 22 seasons, Durbin's teams have made 15 NCAA appearances, averaged 22 wins per season, and never had a losing season. During the decade of the 90's, Durbin posted a 144-13 (.917) record. Over the last 15 years, the Blazers have had only one season when they did not win 20 or more games. Durbin played high school football and basketball at East Knox High, where he also got his coaching start as an assistant varsity coach. In 2007-08, the Blazers finished with a 20-6 record, their 12th consecutive 20+ winning season, but failed to earn an NCAA bid.

St. Benedict's plays in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (www.miac-online.org). The MIAC is considered one of the toughest D3 conferences and is comprised of 13 private schools, all from Minnesota. St. Benedict can start league play in early December though a two week break at Xmas is customary before resuming conference play in January. St. Benedict will play each team twice, home and away. The 22 league games are typically played on Mondays and/or Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The farthest conference away game is at Concordia-Moorhead about 150 miles from campus. The season concluded with the MIAC tourney which takes the top six teams (top two receives first round byes) in a single elimination format. The winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
