Head coach Naomi Graves completed her 17th season at Springfield in 2007-08. When Graves arrived in 1991-92, the women's basketball team had won a total of nine games in three previous seasons. At first, Graves did no better, winning only 13 games in her first four seasons. Since 1995-96, however, Graves has reversed her bad luck and has turned the program into one of the best New England has to offer as attested by her .688 winning percentage over the last eight seasons. In 2000-01, Graves took the team to its first NCAA tourney and then repeated that feat in 2001-02 by advancing to the Sweet 16, capturing back-to-back conference and tournament crowns. Prior to joining the Springfield faculty, Graves was a standout player at Rhode Island. As a high school phenom, Graves scored 2,137 points and was a high school All-American. In 2007-08, the Pride improved on last year's mark of 14-12, going 16-11.

Springfield joined the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (www.NEWMAC.org) in 1998-99 after playing an independent schedule. The NEWMAC is comprised of 10 schools from Masschususets and Connecticut. Among D3 conferences, it is one of the nation's most competitive. Springfield usually takes a two-three-week break in December before commencing league play in January though non-league opponents are routinely mixed in throughout the season. Springfield currently plays four team twice and the remainder once for a total of 13 games. Games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Post-season play is determined by 1) Won-loss record and national ranking and/or 2) winning the NEWMAC tournament, which includes all teams in a double round-robin format.
