Head coach Gary Fifield completed his 21st season at Southern Maine in 2007-08. Through 21 seasons, Fifield has never had a losing season. Not surprisingly, Southern Maine is among the elite D3 women's programs in the nation and in the last eight years has compiled the third best won-loss percentage of all D3 programs profiled at CBSAguide. Among current D3 coaches, Fifield has the best winning percentage (.864). Since Fifield's arrival in 1987-88, the Huskies have captured 19 conference titles and been to the NCAA tourney every year but one. Fifield came to Southern Maine from Vermont Technical College where he was the men's coach for three seasons. In 2007-08, the Huskies captured their eighth straight conference championship and posted a 25-4 mark, losing to Brandeis in the first round of the NCAA tourney.
