Head coach Rick Herdes completed his 7th season at Southern Indiana in 2007-08. Appointed in 2001-02 after serving nine seasons as associate head coach, Herdes inherited a program that had nine consecutive 20+ winning seasons and nine NCAA bids. As USI's recruiting coordinator, Herdes brought in nearly all the key players who contributed to USI becoming a national D2 power. Herdes came to USI from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (D2) where he served as an assistant coach for six seasons. In his nine seasons as an associate head coach, Herdes helped direct the Eagles to a 231-46 overall record (.833), the 1994 and 1995 NCAA II National Championships, three Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, nine consecutive NCAA II Tournament appearances, and nine straight 20-win seasons. USI has averaged over 23 victories a season over the last eight years. In 2007-08, the Screaming Eagles went 15-12.

Southern Indiana plays in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (www.glvcsports.com). The GLVC is one of the premier D2 conferences. In 2005-06, the GLVC expanded to 14 teams. The league is split into two divisions. SIU competes in the west. USI will play each team in its division twice and each team from the East Division once for a total of 19 games. SIU may begin playing conference opponents in late November or early December but only consistently after January 1. Each opponent is played twice, home and away, with games often played on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is common for league games to be piggybacked with the women's. The season concludes with the GLVC tourney which takes the top eight teams with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA berth.
