Founded in 1862, South Dakota is the state's oldest university. Its focus is primarily liberal arts at the undergraduate level though the university is home to the state's only medical and law schools and the only college of Fine Arts. Women make up about 63% of the those enrolled. South Dakota offers over 50 Bachelor degree programs and over 30 Master's. Majors offered include Computer and Information Sciences, Dental Hygienist, Health Care Administration, Physical Education Teaching and Coaching, and Substance Abuse/Addiction Counseling. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked South Dakota in the fourth tier among national institutions. The campus is located in Vermillion (pop. 10k) in the southeast corner of the state, about 250 miles north of Omaha. Head coach Dave Boots completed his 20th season at South Dakota in 2007-08. During the 90's the Coyotes claimed four conference titles and a won-loss record of 271-106. Overall, Boots has been a collegiate head coach for 27 years, recording a .709 winning percentage, 16th best among active D2 coaches. Boots, South Dakota's all time winningest coach, came to USD in 1988-89 after spending six years at his alma mater Augsburg College (D3). He inherited a program that had had eight consecutive losing seasons and endured its worst losing streak since the 1960's. At South Dakota, Boots has won six conference regular season titles while receiving ten NCAA bids. In 2007-08, the Coyotes finished at 22-7 but were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tourney by Northern State.

South Dakota plays in the realigned North Central Conference (www.northcentralconference.org) which is comprised of nine schools from four states. South Dakota's league schedule involves playing each opponent twice, home and away. The farthest conference away game is at Minnesota-Duluth some 500 miles from campus. The season concludes with the NCC tourney which includes all seven teams with first round byes for the top seeds. The winner receives an automatic NCAA bid.
