Founded in 1881, South Dakota State is the state's largest university. The university's primary focus is in agriculture and biological sciences but offers degrees in many other areas as well such as Pharmacy, Nursing, and Engineering. It offers over 70 Bachelor degree programs and nearly 30 Master's. Other majors offered include Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, Consumer Economics, Foods, Nutrition, and Wellness Studies, Landscaping and Groundskeeping, and Wildlands Science and Management. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked South Dakota State in the fourth tier among national universities. The campus is located near the Minnesota border in Brookings, South Dakota. This small but lively town of nearly 19,000 people is less than an hour’s drive to the state’s largest city, Sioux Falls. Sports programs with recent success include wrestling, men's basketball, and cross country. In 2003, SDSU ranked among the top three schools in the nation in the Sears Cup voting. Head coach Aaron Johnston enters his 8th season at South Dakota State in 2007-08. Johnston spent the 99-00 season as an assistant coach under Nancy Neiber but coached the last six games of that season as interim head coach going 4-2. After the season he was promoted to the head job. In his first full season (2000-01) he went 15-12. In 2002-03 he won the D2 National Championship finishing with the program's best ever record of 32-3. In his short tenure, Johnston has complied a 170-55 record. Prior to his arrival, Johnston spent two seasons assisting the men's team. SDSU transitioned from D2 to D1 in 2004-05. In 2006-07, the Lady Jacks posted a 25-6 record, the fourth 20+ winning season in the last five years under Johnston.

South Dakota State had played the North Central Conference (www.northcentralconference.org), considered by most as one of the most competitive D2 conferences in the nation. However, 2006-07 will mark SDSU's third season as a provisional Division I program and will play an independent schedule.
