Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the first historically black college of the South. Shaw is a private, co-educational, liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist Church. Majors offered include Education, Religious Studies, International Relations, African Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, and Computer Information Systems. Head coach Jacques Curtis enters his eighth season at Shaw University in 2007-08. Inheriting a program that was DOA in 2000-01, Curtis struggled his first two seasons but has since produced one of the most potent D2 programs in the nation. Over the last five seasons Curtis has led the Lady Bears to a 133-19 record, won 71 of 74 league games, made four NCAA tournament appearances, and was nationally ranked among the top 20 teams four times! Shaw began his coaching career as an assistant for Shaw's men's program. From there, he took the head men's coaching position at his alma mater, Savannah State, before coming back to Shaw to guide the women. In 2006-07, he led his team to a 14-6 record.

Shaw belongs to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (www.theciaa.com), the oldest African-American athletic conference in the United States. The CIAA is comprised of 11 teams from Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. The conference is divided into two divisions, east and west. Shaw plays in the more competitive eastern division. Shaw will begin conference play in January and plays each team in its own division twice, home and away, and teams in the west once for a total of 16 games. The CIAA's annual basketball tournament is the third most attended athletic event in collegiate sports after the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East tournaments.
