Founded in 1888 as Saint Thomas College, it achieved university status in 1938, and was entrusted to the care of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1942. The University of Scranton offers over 40 Bachelor degree programs and over 20 graduate level programs including Business Administration, Education, Nursing, Chemisty, and Counseling. Other majors offered include Gerontological Services, International Relations and Affairs, and Occupational Therapy/Therapist. US News 2007 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Scranton #10 among universities in the north offering a Master's degree. The 58 acre campus is located in northeastern Pennsylvania in Scranton (pop. 75k) about 100 miles north of Philadelphia. Head coach Mike Strong completed his 28th season at the University of Scranton in 2007-08. Strong inherited a program in 1979-80 that was already of elite caliber. Strong has carried on the tradtion with the women's program which now boasts a .824 winning percentage since inception. Among all active D3 coaches, Strong ranks 5th in winning percentage. Strong began his career at the College of West Virginia (NAIA) as an assistant coach. In 28 seasons, Strong's teams have averaged better than 24 wins per season and made 24 NCAA appearances, and have twice been crowned national champions (76, 83). In conference play, opposing teams have had a rough go with Scranton losing only 12 league games in the last eight years. The Lady Royals went 21-6 in 2007-08 - the program's 17th consecutive season with 20 or more wins - but were beaten in the first round of the NCAA tourney by Medaille.

Scranton, which fomerly played in the Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference, moved to the Landmark Conference in 2007-08 which is comprised of eight schools from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C. Scranton will play each team twice, home and away. Conference games are typically played on Friday evening or Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The conference concludes with the conference tourney which takes the top four teams in a single elimination format with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA bid.
