Founded in 1854, Salem State originally served as a teacher's college. It currently offers 25 Bachelor degrees and 10 graduate programs. Nearly two-thirds of those enrolled are women. Majors offered include Fire Services Administration, Cartography, Criminal Justice, and Sport Fitness and Leisure Studies. US News 2008 Report on Amercia's Best Colleges ranked Salem State in the 4th tier among universities in the north offering Master's degree.

Misc. Information

Head coach Chris Harvey took over from Sean Doherty in 2007-08. Harvey's head coaching experience came at Lasell College where he averaged 20+ wins per season over a five year stint, made three NCAA D3 appearances, and was chosen conference COTY three times. Most recently, Harvey served as an assistant at Tufts. The 1994 Worcester College grad began his college coaching career at Lasell as an assistant before being handed the reins in 2000. In 2006-07, Salem State went 24-3 but was beaten in the second round of the NCAA tourney by Keene State. The Vikings have been selected for NCAA tourney play 21 times since their first appearance in 1980. In Harvey's inaugural season, he led the Vikings to a 21-7 mark and a first round NCAA appearance, losing to Gettysburg.

Conference and Schedule

Salem State plays in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference which is comprised of seven teams from Massachusetts. League play commences in January after two week winter break. Salem State will play each team twice, home and away. Games are usually played on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays and Saturdays are piggybacked with the women's. The team usually travels by school bus or vans. The season concludes with the MSCAC tourney which takes includes the top four team,s hosted by the regular season champion. Tourney winner receives automatic NCAA berth.
