Founded in 1868, SUNY Cortland was originally established as a state teacher's college. Today it retains that focus and is hme to the largest teacher education program in the Northeast and 9th largest in the U.S. offers over 50 Bachelor degree programs and nearly 20 Masters, the majority of which are in the education field. Some of the undergraduate majors offered include Athletic Training/Trainer, Early Childhood Education and Teaching, Film/Cinema Studies, African-American/Black Studies, International/Global Studies, and Recreation and Leisure Studies. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked SUNY:Cortland #70 mong universities in the north offering a Master's degree. The campus is located in the traditional college town of Cortland (20k), about 50 miles from Syracuse. The College's main campus covers 191 acres. Head coach Jeanette Yeoman completed her 10th season at SUNY Cortland in 2007-08. In 2000-01 she guided the Red Dragons to a school best 27-3 record and the program's first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since 1992. In her short tenure, Yeoman has won seven conference titles and made five NCAA appearances. Prior to her arrival in 1998-99, Yeoman served as head women's basketball coach at Alfred University (D3). A 1990 alumna of St. Joseph's College (IN), Yeoman graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,280 points. In 2007-08, Yeoman produced a 24-6 record but did not earn an NCAA bid.

Cortland plays in the State University New York Athletic Conference or SUNYAC (www.sunyac.com) which is comprised of 11 public universites, all from New York state. League play can commence in early December and games are usually piggybacked with the men's. Cortland plays about half the teams twice and the remainder once. The 16 league games are typically on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The farthest conference away game is at Plattsburg, some 300 miles from campus. The season concludes with the SUNYAC tourney which takes the top eight teams with first round byes for the top four. The tournament winner receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III playoffs.
