Head coach C. Vivian Stringer enters her 13th year at Rutgers in 2007-08. Taking over non-performing programs and turning them around was Stringer's claim to fame before arriving at Rutgers in 1995-96. Though the women's program had already established itself as a perrenial contender, hiring Stringer assured continued success. Among active D1 coaches, Stringer ranks 11th in winning percentage and her win total (777) puts her fourth. Over the last eight seven seasons, she has averaged 23 wins per year and made nine NCAA tournament appearances. Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Stringer resuscitated two programs: Cheyney (D3) and Iowa (D1). In 2006-07 the Scarlet Knights compiled a 27-9 record and advanced to the NCAA championship game where they were beaten by Tennessee.

Rutgers plays in the tough Big East (www.bigeast.org) which increased its membership in 2005-06 to 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Rutgers will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament. League play commences in January with games usually played on Tuesday or Wednesday evening and Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East Tourney with the eventual winner being an automatic qualifier.

Stringer's trademark has always been a suffocating brand of half-court defense, disguising multiple looks to keep teams off-balance. Her matchup zone and full court traps are equally troublesome for opponents. In 2006-07, for the third year in a row, Rutgers was among the top 20 in defense, limiting opponents to 54.4 ppg.
