Misc. Information

Head coach Jamie Dixon completed his 5th year at Pittsburgh in 2007-08. Dixon, who took over for Ben Howland in 2003-04, is largely responsible for the Panther's rise to prominence over the last few years because of his recruiting acumen. Consider that in the four years prior to 2002 the Panthers went 57-61 and finished no better than 10th place. In the last eight years, the Panthers have made three first place finishes, seven NCAA appearances - four of which were Sweet 16s - and were ranked among the top 20 teams four times. Before coming to Pittsburgh as an assistant coach in 1999-00, Dixon coached at the assistant level at UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and Northern Arizona. Dixon attended Notre Dame HS in Sherman Oaks, California where he won all-league honors and then attended Texas Christian University (TCU) where he led the Horned Frogs to two conference titles. Dixon was selected by the Washington Bullets in the 1987 draft. In 2007-08, the Panthers went 27-10, but lost in the second round of the NCAA tourney to Michigan State.

Conference and Schedule

Pittsburgh plays in the Big East (www.bigeast.org) which is now comprised of 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Pittsburgh will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) League games are usually played on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
