Penn State at University Park is the flagship of the state university system which features 24 campuses. Founded in 1855, Penn State was America's first institution to confer graduate degrees in agriculture. Today, Penn State offers more than 160 BA majors and 150 at the graduate level. Other majors offered include Acting, Animal Sciences, Information Sciences, Criminal Justice, Entomology, Film/Cinema Studies, Hospitality Administration, and Theatre Design and Technology. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Penn State #48 among national institutions.

The main campus is located at University Park, which is a borough of State College, PA. State College is a rapidly growing community located in the middle of Pennsylvania, about 130 miles east of Pittsburgh. The area has a population in excess of 120,000.

Head coach Coquese Washington begins her first season in 2007-08 and first as a head coach. Washington, who was a four-year starting point guard for Notre Dame in the early 90s, takes over from Rene Portland who completed her 27th season at Penn State in 2006-07. During Portland's long tenure, she recorded nineteen 20+ win seasons and a .723 career winning percentage. However, Portland struggled her last two years; enter Washington who spent two seasons as the associate head coach at Notre Dame and another six as an assistant under Muffet McGraw. One of the top recruiters in the country, Washington was instrumental in helping the Irish to secure eight consecutive Top 25 recruiting classes. During Washington's eight seasons on the bench, Notre Dame amassed a 188-69 record with eight NCAA Tournament appearances. The Lady Lions went 15-16 in 2006-07.

Conference and Schedule

Penn State plays in the Big Ten (www.bigten.org), one of the nation's premier D1 conferences. The Big Ten is comprised of 11 schools from eight states. Currently, Penn State plays a 16 game schedule and plays six league opponents twice and four once. League play starts late December or early January with games usually played on Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon. The season concludes with the Big 10 tournament. All 11 teams participate. The bracket will be seeded according to the final regular-season standings with the League champion earning the top seed and the top five finishers receiving first-round byes. Tourney winner is an automatic qualifier.

Style/Stats

Penn State finished the season 12th in the NCAA in free throw percentage (75.8). Adrienne Squire broke the NCAA single-season free throw percentage record (96.4) in 2005-06. Amanda Brown was one of two players in the Big Ten to finish in the Top 10 in the conference in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and field goal percentage.
