Founded in 1889, SUNY Oneonta primarily offers a liberal arts program with a pre-professional focus. It is one of 14 schools in the NY state-run university system. Oneonta is particularly renowned for its education program. It offers over 50 Bachelor degree programs and nine graduate majors. Head Coach Daphne Thompson begins her first season at SUNY Oneonta in 2008-09. Thompson took over from Dan McGraw who served for nine seasons, producing a .665 winning percentage. Thompson most recently served as the head coach at Hartwick College. During her tenure at Hartwick she compiled a 223-161 record while making four NCAA tournament appearances. A 1990 graduate of the University of Delaware, Thompson was a four-year varsity player for the Division I Blue Hens and a team captain as a senior. In 2007-08, the Red Dragons posted a 20-9 record, the program's ninth straight winning season.

Oneonta plays in the State University New York Athletic Conference or CUNYAC (www.sunyac.com) which is comprised of 11 teams, all from New York. League play usually commences in early December and are usually piggybacked with the men's. Oneonta plays most teams twice. Games are often played on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
