Founded in 1930 as a branch of William and Mary College, Old Dominion became an independent institution in 1962. It offers over 80 Bachelor degrees, over 40 Masters, and 15 PhDs including those in Ecology, Oceanography, and International Relations. Nearly two-thirds of those enrolled are women. Other majors offered include Audiology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Dental Hygiene, Criminology, International Relations, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Facilities Management, and Physical Education Teaching and Coaching. US News 2008 report on America's Best Colleges ranked Old Dominion in the third tier among national institutions.

The campus is located in Norfolk (pop.234k) about 150 miles south of Washington D.C. and situated between the Lafayette and Elizabeth rivers.

Entering her 21st season at Old Dominion in 2007-08 is head coach Wendy Larry. Larry, who joined Old Dominion in 1987-88, has been instrumental in building the women's program from the very beginning. Considered among the elite head coaches at the D1 level, Larry's teams have reached 18 NCAA tourneys. Larry has achieved eight COTY honors. Old Dominion has also earned thee national championships (1979, 1980 and1985). During her tenure, the Monarchs assembled what was known as The Streak, consisting of 113 consecutive regular and post season conference victories from 1995-2001. The last time the Monarchs won less than 20 games in one season was 1990-91. Prior to her arrival at her alma mater, Larry was head coach at nearby Virginia Wesleyan for two seasons and Arizona for three. In 2006-07, the Lady Monarchs finished at 24-9, but lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney to Florida State.

Conference and Schedule

Old Dominion plays in the Colonial Athletic Association (www.caasports.com) which is comprised of twelve teams from seven states, stretching from Massachusetts to Georgia. The CAA is generally considered one of the better mid-major conferences. Currently, Old Dominion plays a 18 game schedule with conference play usually starting in January with games often played on Thursday or Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.
