Head coach Jeff Capel completed his second season at Oklahoma in 2007-08. Capel took over from Kelvin Sampson who completed his 12th season at Oklahoma in 2005-06. Capel has big shoes to fill. Sampson guided the Sooners to nine consecutive 20 win seasons, averaging 25 wins per year and over the previous 12 years made the post season every year (11 NCAA appearances and 1 NIT). Capel, who compiled a 79-41 (.658) record over the last four years as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University, won at least 18 games in each of his four seasons. Capel began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion University in 2000 before moving to VCU as an assistant for the 2001-02 season. In 2002, he became the youngest NCAA Division I head coach at age 27. Capel was a four-year starter for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. In 2007-08, Capel's second season, the Sooners went 23-12 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney before falling to Louisville.
