Oklahoma Baptist was founded in 1910 and has a liberal arts focus. Head coach John McCullough completed his 8th season at Oklahoma Baptist in 2007-08. McCullough inherited a perrenial winner in 2000-01 and has continued the program's winning ways. During his brief tenure, McCullough's teams have compiled a 180-87 record, averaged 22 wins per season, and qualified for the NAIA national tournament every year. A 1980 graduate of the U. of Oklahoma, McCullough was a Big 8 MVP and All American in 1979. He also played for the Phoenix Suns for three seasons. Prior to his arrival at OKBU, McCullough was head coach at New Mexico Highlands (D2). In 2007-08, the Lady Bison went 29-5 but lost in the first round of the NAIA tournament to Lindsey Wilson.

Oklahoma Baptist plays in the Sooner Athletic Conference (www.soonerathletic.org) which is recognized as one of the strongest NAIA conferences in the nation. The SAC is comprised of twelve schools from Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. League plays starts in early January with games usually on Thursday and Saturdays. OKBU will play each team twice, home and away, for a total of 22 games. The season concludes with the SAC tourney which takes the top eight teams in order of final conference standings. The winner is an automatic NAIA tournament qualifier.
