Notre Dame plays in the tough Big East (www.bigeast.org) which increased its membership in 2005-06 to 17 teams. The Big East currently represents the majority of the large, athletically competitive private Catholic schools. League play, which consists of 16 games, starts after the first of the year. Notre Dame will play three opponents twice, 10 once, and 3 none at all. (This will change in 2007-08; Big East teams will play everyone once and three teams twice.) The season concludes with the Big East tourney with the winner being an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament. League play commences in January with games usually played on Tuesday or Wednesday evening and Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The season concludes with the Big East Tourney with the eventual winner being an automatic qualifier.
